Its population was 12,350 at the 2020 Census, making it the largest city in Wharton County. == Geography == According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.5 square miles (19.3 km2), all land. == Demographics == === 2020 census === As of the 2020 census, El Campo had a population of 12,350, 4,447 households, and 3,067 families residing in the city. Of the households, 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living in them, 46.1% were married-couple households, 17.5% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, 29.8% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present, 25.6% were made up of individuals, and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35.2 years, with 28.0% of residents under the age of 18 and 16.1% aged 65 years or older. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 91.6 males age 18 and over.
