The town is named after Andrew Jackson, who was nicknamed "Old Hickory." == Geography == Hickory is located at 32°19′01″N 89°01′24″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land. == Demographics == === 2020 census === As of the 2020 United States census, there were 408 people, 157 households, and 137 families residing in the town. === 2000 census === As of the census of 2000, there were 499 people, 190 households, and 137 families residing in the town. The population density was 535.9 inhabitants per square mile (206.9/km2). There were 207 housing units at an average density of 222.3 per square mile (85.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 43.69% White, 55.11% African American, 0.20% Native American, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population. There were 190 households, out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% were married couples living together, 24.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families.
